The only reason to use a paint roller frame without some sort of screw-on extension is if there’s not enough space to maneuver. Otherwise, the longer the stick, the better. Size does matter. Also, it’s worth having a heavy-duty roller frame and a substantial painting stick. A few extra bucks on proper tools make the job so much quicker and easier.

From a previous post on using the same roller for the j […]

From a previous post on using the same roller for the job duration it may be clear that the roller can become stuck to the frame. It’s also a bit messy to grab and remove. Here’s my favorite trick: Use a roofing hammer – the blade end – and simply hack the roller off. It will ruin the roller but 1) they’re cheap, and 2) we’re done with it. If you’re careful it won’t damage the roller frame at all.

To finally pull it off and discard it, use an 11×14 hdpe food bag as a gripper and receptacle for the used roller. The bags are cheap by the roll or, if you’re really cheap, you can grab a few for free in the grocery section of your favorite market!

As a corollary to my roller tricks – it’s best to buy heavy-duty, high-quality roller frames. They can last a long time if you keep them clean and dry.

I never… that’s NEVER!… clean my pain […]

I never… that’s NEVER!… clean my paint rollers. I just roll out as much as possible, leave them on the rolling frame, then wrap them (roll them up) in a 1 gallon food bag. They stay completely fresh for days if not weeks! At the end of the job I throw away the roller (not the frame) – they’re only a buck or two… not worth the time to clean them. Not to mention it takes an incredible amount of water to properly clean a roller.

If you use multiple paint colors on a job, simply have a frame/roller set up for each color.

I buy my plastic bags in large rolls at a place like Smart&Final. You can find them on Amazon as well. Get the 11×14 HDPE (high density polyethylene).

Photos coming soon.
